Domain Name Service (DNS) is normally a feature provided by the company which either hosts your email or your website.  DNS is what enables the casual Internet user to locate your website or email by using a name rather than a physical address of numbers.  This convenience makes use of the Internet easier as we refer to sites in a manner much easier to remember than a bunch of meaningless numbers.

DNS is also used to manage private websites within a company, and for certain other applications like remote access and FTP.
